It was November 1999 after many searches on the internet that I decided to take my first trip to look at Nevada County real estate, specifically, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood.

I packed some clothes in my overnight bag and tossed it in the back of my old Porsche to take my first road trip these historic gold towns.

For so many years travelling to and from Lake Tahoe I had seen the exit sign on hwy 80 for Nevada City and Grass Valley but had never ventured down highway 20 to visit either of these old gold towns.

It was late Friday afternoon that I pulled into Nevada City and was surprised that the main street was blocked off for what looked like some kind of a fair. This turned out to be the Victorian Christmas event that takes place every year in Nevada City and Grass Valley. When hosted in Grass Valley it is called Cornish Christmas.

I checked into the Holbrook hotel, snared a hot toddy and proceeded to take in all of the sights of my first Victorian Christmas in Nevada City. There were young children dressed to fit the Victorian era playing violins and singing Christmas carols. There was a tall gentleman with a stove top hat roasting chestnuts on an open fire. ( Guess what Christmas song was playing in the background) Multiple food booths offered hotdogs, hamburgers, Italian sausage, steak sandwiches, Carmel corn, cakes and candies. Fair booths displaying vendor goods of everything you could imagine.

The smell of all of the food, in conjunction with the Christmas decorations, Victorian Costumes, Music, crowed streets with friendly happy people gathered together in a beautifully preserved old gold town on a crisp holiday night had hooked me. Nevada County was going to be my new home. It was so simple. All I had to do was convince my spouse to retire, sell the home we had bought new 25 years earlier and move from Los Gatos/Almaden area to a very Rural Nevada County. No Nordstrom, Macy, Emporium or Costco.

Perhaps this was not going to be an easy task.
