HOMES FOR SALE IN NEVADA CITY, CA
Real Estate in Nevada County, CA
Lake Wildwood, Penn Valley, Grass Valley, Nevada City
About 6 years ago I my office was on Broad Street in Nevada City. Potential buyers not familiar with the area would ask "What is the difference between Grass Valley and Nevada City?" I liked to tell the story that in the gold rush days the miners lived in Grass Valley and the owners of the mines lived in Nevada City. When I asked which area they would be most interested to look at houses which town do you think the choose? 160 years later and not much has changed.
Because of their proximity these beautiful historic gold towns are also referred to as "The Twin Cities" and are equally admired. Each have excellent restaurants, hotels, motels, and B & B'S.
Built on the banks of Deer Creek in 1849 and was originally named Deer Creek Dry Diggins and later Caldwell's Upper Store. The name was changed to Nevada in 1950, Spanish for "snow covered" and once again when the state of Nevada took the name resulting in City being added to Nevada.
It is now time to educate my readers on a little more history that is fun to tell but also true. When the state of Nevada stole our heritage it enraged the local pioneers so much that they purchase all of the appropriate land to make the boundaries of Nevada County look like a Derringer pointing directly at the state on Nevada.
Nevada became a state on October 31, 1864. I am not sure of the exact date that our forefathers created the "Derringer " shaped county lines. I wonder how many of Nevada State residents know that there is a gun pointed at them from their friendly California neighbors?
